Last months meetup was crazy! Omar gave us his run down on named scopes and then everyone swapped their named scope success stories. Some noobs were there and they were like 'Wow, that's awesome, I didn't know you could do that'. Rui Tao gave a great overview of his scraping site which turned out to be a Thinking Sphinx guide! This month Daniel Pietzsch will be telling us about RubyCAS and Restful authentication and how he hooked them up to create a user management and single sign-on framework for our business. German engineering! I've been getting my head around the Cloud and I'll be doing a talk on a comparison between GoGrid, Rackspace and S3. I'll also debunk some 'myths' and misconceptions ... particularly about Amazons services. Beer and Pizza come standard.

Last months meetup was a blast! Who knew Rails generators could do some much and in so many languages? For the October meetup, Ruitao has promised an overview of his highly popular 'price aggregation' that scrapes the site. But wait there's more ... I've also lined up a solid presentation from Omar Garcia a well respected computer scientist who's almost got a PHD! He's going to do a talk on AR's named scopes, a crucial feature for optimising or genericifying (that's a word right?) your AR based Rails app: Here's Omar's run down: Active Record Named Scopes - Active Record goals - What are Named scopes (new in rails 2.1) - Simple Named Scopes - What happens under the hood new methods, Generated SQL - Flexible named scopes Using parameter Using optional parameters - Do's and Don'ts (optional I have some raw ideas on this topic) - Related topics Default scope (new in rails 2.3) !-----xxXX Lots of sample code XXxx----! Omar's such a legend I'm thinking we might not need the Circus Performers ... but Beer and Pizza come standard.

To kick things of again I will do presentation on creating Rails generators. I have some code examples showing how I've used a generator to create ActionScript code and tests that you can use in Flex to talk to a Rails back end using RubyAMF.

Hi everyone, For the August Auckland Ruby Meetup, we have secured the Visfleet Offices as a meeting space. We need to get some talks, so if you want to give a talk about something cool you've build, feel free to put your hand up. Cheers, Marcus

Hi everyone, For the May Auckland ruby meetup, we will be at a different location, as the folks at VisFleet have kindly offered to help us, and it seems fun to share our love with all the companies in Auckland doing ruby development. We've got the following talk lined up so far: Maruis will be presenting a talk on "Rhodes - the open source ruby framework for building mobile applications". Does anyone else have a talk that they would like to give? cheers, Craig

Hi everyone, Although we'd discussed moving the regularly scheduled meetup to the 1st Wednesday of the month, I'd forgotten to move the recurring meetup in our calendar, so this meetup is currently April 8th (the second wednesday) and I don't want to change it as people have already RSVPed. We've got some great talks lined up: Background Tasks for Ruby Apps (including Starling and Workling) by Glen Barnes PDF Generation using the RGhost Gem by Ruitao Su A demonstration of Pliki, and open source pluggable wiki by Craig Ambrose Please bring $5 or so for pizza. Parking is available behind the Napier Computing Systems building.
