Rajiv Aggarwal will present a how-to of telephony applications with Ruby and Rails (and Asterisk) based on his experience building CellGuided. CellGuided is hosted at Slicehost (a high quality commodity VPS service).

CellGuided allows you to find, create and share tours and treasures hunts. All directions, clues and responses are spoken to you over an ordinary mobile phone. This allows you to enjoy tours that others have created and also allows you to create treasure hunts that you can share.

This meetup will be held in the heart of downtown at a brand-new must-see venue. Please be on-time or have my cell phone if you plan to be late (I have to let you in). If you don't know my cell number, email me or solve the simple cipher posted on the door.

We'll start with quick demo of how to implement geo-search with Ruby on Rails (i.e. find all coffee shops within some radius of me). After the demo, we're open to discuss any subject that you bring, and/or continue hacking.

As per our new usual, the meetup will start with a specific demonstration from some aspect of web development with Ruby on Rails. I haven't yet decided on a topic, so please do contact me with your requests if you have them.

After the demo, we'll review our progress from the hack session focused on our online poker Ruby on Rails application and, with more of the skeleton created, will come up with some next actions for people to get involved with.

Note: I hope to hold this meetup downtown at a spiffy new venue, but am beholden to mysterious powers beyond. For now, let's assume our usual spot (E2-280 at UCSC).

Detailed Directions and Parking

This customized Google map contains markers for the meetup room and parking locations.

The Engineering 2 Building is located in the northwest corner of UCSC, on "Science Hill." Room 280 is on the far east side of the building near the street-level entrance. Meetup signs will be posted on the building entrance door and the meetup room itself. If the main entrance is locked, "knock" (we'll be steps away and be listening).

From the UCSC Main Entrance: Proceed up Coolidge Drive (which Bay Street turns into) following the main road onto McLaughlin Drive. As McLaughlin Drive ends, turn left onto Heller Drive, then left again into the multi-level parking garage called Core West Parking Structure (the closest parking to Baskin Engineering).

Parking permits at Core West cost $2.00 after 5pm, and there are pay-stations that accept cash and credit card located inside the parking structure. Alternatively, you could park in the North Perimeter lot, which is free after 5pm but is a short hike from Engineering 2.

We will pair-up and lay down code for the poker application. Bring your laptop if you've got one, but bringing a laptop isn't required (we'll be working two people to a computer). All experience levels are welcome and newbies are especially encouraged to attend: this will be an ideal learn-by-doing opportunity.

We'll meet at Jack's lounge, which is on the west side of Baskin Engineering on the ground floor. (Baskin Engineering is the building in front of and connected to the Engineering 2 building which many of you are familiar with.)

Continuing the theme of Git and GitHub, I'll demonstrate how to pull changes from someone's cloned repository on GitHub, or on the local network. This will be useful for playing with or combining your work with other developers in the group.

Then, we'll compare the schema proposals for our online poker application, define development tasks to be claimed and begin coding!

We're embarking on a journey!

First, I'll demonstrate how to create a formal Ruby on Rails project, including setting up a Git repository for collaboration using the revolutionary GitHub. We'll then focus on the application we're going to develop as a group. The application will leverage many features of Ruby on Rails and explore general web development challenges and solutions. We'll also leverage existing expertise within the group, learning from each other whenever possible.

Join fellow technologists for an introduction to the Rails 2.0.2 web-framework and the Ruby programming language. See why Ruby is among the fastest growing languages, gain insight into why Rails has and continues to change the way web applications are built, and learn how you can use these tools to create better applications with less effort.

This meetup is intended to be introductory in nature but will also have depth. Newbies, those not yet using Rails 2.0.2, and seasoned RoR developers are sure to benefit and enjoy.

Come see the Mechatronics class public demonstration of their final class projects, and see why they have not slept in weeks. The public is invited to cheer and heckle the competition as they run their 'droids through the field. You might have to duck a few ping pong balls. (full flier)

The event will be held at UCSC's Humanities and Social Sciences Facility in the Humanities Lecture Hall 206, which is across Hagar Drive from the Bay Tree Bookstore. Refer to this Google Map or UCSC Campus Map.
