The Silicon Valley Ruby on Rails meetup will have it's next meeting on February 15th, 2007! Please join us at Insider Pages' Redwood Shores office for another fun evening. We'll be continuing our dual focus on real-world Rails development and bootstrapping startups. We have two excellent speakers lined up.

Scott Persinger from vod:pod, a site for "hyperaggregation of video around personal groups and interests", is coming to share his experiences using Rails to build the online video startup.

Matt Whittaker from My Free Copyright will talk to us about how "Ruby on Rails makes it possible to bootstrap a company solo." He'll share the story of his one-man startup and it's technical challenges, and going from zero to hundreds of users and registrations in less than two months.

Watch this space for more details on the talks as they become available. Insider Pages has once again offered to supply pizza and refreshments. See you there!

Go down Bridge Parkway, look for a sign that says "2000-2600 Bridge Parkway" with an arrow. Turn right at the sign, and look for our 2200 building which will be on your right a little ways in (past the tree). Check the photos section for a picture of our office.

Who attended?

  • 60 attendees
    •  1st presentation lacked focus and seemed to be too much about some puzzlement experienced on building a first app. More questions than answers. 2nd presentation was good, but would have been better with an actual demo of the end result.
    •  I felt as though both presentations could have been more focused on something the presenters were doing. Vs. both just giving a general Rails overview.
    •  nice presentations, a little light on technical new stuff, but I always pickup new plugins, stategies, etc.
    •  Scott Persinger's presentation was interesting and informative... I particularly liked his Rails "pros and cons" slides and definitely appreciated the Java application vs. Rails application development effort statistics... Java app = 6 months, 10 developers; Rails app = 6 months, 2 developers; Rails app = delivered more functionality/features. That's the kind of info. we all need to help evangelize Rails in our own workplaces. I didn't expect that somebody who'd built a site related to copyrights would be so interesting, and I'm really glad I was so wrong... Matt Whittaker from myfreecopyright.com delivered a presentation that was definitely interesting and engaging. He was very frank, very well prepared, and well... very inspiring. His attitude/demeanor are in alignment with my image of the Ruby/Rails community (open, smart, pragmatic). It's obvious to me that he's going to be very successful. This was my first SV RoR Meetup, and it was well worth the drive.
    •  Great group of folks, learned a lot and made new friends.
    •  Well-hosted by Zack @ Insider Pages... Both speakers were good... Liked the format... Overall well worth attending...
    •  Another great shindig put on by the Insider Pages guys (Word up, Zack!)
