Director of Engineering
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Contract or Full Time/Perm
Rate/Salary: Completely Open (DOE) + bonus

The role consists of 80-90% management and 10-20% hands on coding.

The Director of Engineering will be responsible for building, mentoring and leading a team of 10-15 Ruby on Rails Developers. The Director of Engineering will be responsible for reviewing current architecture and source code, making recommendations and lead the development into production. The Director of Engineering will be responsible for interacting with Product Managers, Research Leads, Quality Assurance Managers and other Development Managers. The Director of Engineering will be, on an as needed basis, performing some of the more complex development and will be managing Sr. Ruby Developers that are a part of newly created team that is responsible for researching, investigating, evaluating, designing and developing middle tier services that will drive and enhance the latest products from this cutting edge division. The Sr. Ruby developers are involved in the full life cycle development process consisting of development of and review of architecture documentation, building of prototypes, issue identification, Ruby development, testing process, deployment, enhancement and documentation. This newly created team is primarily working on two projects:
1. Design, build, develop and enhance the middle tier services layer the lies in between the search engine systems and Web and Mobile presentation layer. The Ruby Engineers will develop code and API’s that accesses and retrieves data from the search engine and returns results, using JSON and XML to the Web and/or Mobile presentation layer. Depending on the experience level, the Sr. Ruby Engineer will be responsible for designing, architecting/re-architecting and developing prototypes and large scalable production systems.
2. Research the latest technologies for NLP/Natural Language Processing, Information/Data/Text Retrieval, indexing, Data Mining/Parsing, user intent, etc. and implement into the middle tier services layer using Ruby.
The Director of Engineering will report to the VP of Engineering.

REQUIREMENTS:
MUST HAVE significant experience managing a team of Ruby (preferably) or Python or OO PHP developers
MUST HAVE some hands on experience developing Ruby (preferably) or Python or OO PHP
MySQL
Experience within an Agile or Scrum Development environment is preferred
Knowledge of and/or experience with Web Services Standards (SOAP, REST XML, Spring Remoting, RPC, JAX-WS or WSDL)
Plus:
Solr or Lucene or pylucene or compass or nutch or knowmydestination or krugle or moxdex or wikia search or hibernate search or xapian or tika or EB-eye or liferay or other search engine

MVC
Hadoop/MapReduce frameworks or Cloud Computing
Java
Should have Bachelors and/or Masters and/or PhD in C.S. or related degree
