Looks like 61% of the 23 members who responded to the poll preferred this Wednesday night, so please join us then for a special presentation by Andrew DuPont on:

How to write JavaScript without losing your mind

Andrew will talk about the tools he uses to debug JavaScript, including an in-depth look at Firebug and a discussion about how to diagnose and circumvent common frustrations and browser bugs. He will also have three copies of his book Practical Prototype and script.aculo.us (Expert's Voice in Web Development) to give away as door prizes.

As always, food and drinks will be provided.

Please note: Rosetta Stone has graciously offered the use of their facilities for these meetings. The only provision is that non-Rosetta Stone employees must sign a liability release before attending your first meeting. You can find a copy of this release on this site under the Files section for your review and comment. Please bring a signed copy with you to your initial meeting.

Two presentations this month!

As modern web user interfaces rely more heavily on javascript, the functionality slips farther away from being testable in Rails’ conventional automated test frameworks. Client-side logic can be tested in a browser using Selenium. When combined with Polonium, in-browser automated tests can be driven from a Ruby test framework within your Rails application. Rob Lineweaver will discuss the architecture behind Selenium, when and how to use it, and demonstrate writing in-browser automated tests using Selenium & Polonium in Rails.

Ra'Shaun Stovall has recently created an application written in rails which will be used by a local company servicing thousands within the Shenandoah Valley for over 40 years. Ra'Shaun will do a case study through the application development process ending with front end functionality.

As always, food and drinks will be provided.

Have you ever had the urge to write some graffitti on a wall? Have you ever just eaten at the best (or worst) restaurant and wished you could tell the world? Well, our next month's speaker's iPhone application, Graffitio, will let you do both of these in the virtual world. Anoop Ranganath from Charlottesville will talk about how his love for Ruby and eating led to this unique iPhone application powered by Ruby on the server side.

As always, food and drinks will be provided.

News Flash! Rich Kilmer and Marcel Molina and Mark Gardner from InfoEther have all accepted our invitation to attend and speak at our September meeting. We are still working out the details of what they will be presenting, so if you have any particular topic of interest, please let us know.

In anticipation of a larger crowd we will be holding this meeting in the banquet room upstairs at Cally's. Since they will be catering the event, please RSVP as soon as you can. We hope to have some special treats and it takes a little more time than just calling in a pizza order the day of the meeting.

Last minute change in plans for this month. The folks from InfoEther had to reschedule for next month, so Myers has volunteered to give a talk on Testing: Fixtures and Mocks. We will also set aside some time for lightning talks, so please bring your best Ruby (or non-Ruby) tidbits from the last couple of months. We also have a suggestion about expanding the focus of the group to discuss as well as where to meet in the coming months, as Rosetta Stone will be turing our current space into offices next month.

As always, food and drinks will be provided.

It's official, our July meeting will inaugurate our Annual ShRUG Picnic. We have reserved a shelter at Purcell Park with the hope that everyone will bring family and/or friends so we can all get to know each other a little better. We will be starting at the usual time, 5:30 pm. Who knows, we might have some door prizes.

As always, food and drinks will be provided. Please let us know by noon on Monday, July 28 if you are attending and how many guests you will be bringing so that we will have enough food and drinks. Also, let us know if anyone in your group has any special dietary needs or preferences and we will try to accommodate. If you have a special desert that you like to make for events like this, please bring it along to share.

See you at the park!

Dave Keener has confirmed that he will be making the trip down from DC to give us some additional insights into OpenID. Dave gave a similar presentation recently to the NovaRUG and a synopsis can be found on his blog. A change to the original plans for this month, Myers and Randy will be giving a report on what they found out while attending RailsConf. We will start the meeting as usual with a meet, greet and eat period which can also be used by anyone needing some 1-on-1 assistance. With these two great topics available we probably will not have time for lightning talks, but if you have an announcement that you would like to make to the group, please speak up during the introductions.

As always, food and drinks will be provided. We might have a special treat for the food this time, so please be sure to RSVP so we will have enough for everyone.

We have two great presentations lined up for this month's meeting. Unfortunately, one of them will not be Myers' Fixtures and Mocks discussion as he will not be able to make this meeting. We will start the meeting as usual with a meet, greet and eat period which can also be used by anyone needing some 1-on-1 assistance. Then we will check to see how many 3-5 minute lightning talks those attending have prepared for this meeting. If time allows, Rob will give a presentation on infrastructure for and deployment of large scale RoR applications. JeffMo will also be ready to give a short presentation on displaying the Ruby class hierarchy, using ObjectSpace, reflection on objects using .class, .metaclass, and .superclass methods, and Ruby/GraphViz.

Food and drinks will be provided.

This month we will be striving to strike the perfect balance between information appropriate for the newbies in the group and the veterans looking for that next trick to stuff in their bag. The meeting will start again with a meet, greet and eat period during which we encourage anyone with a question to bring their laptops and grab one or more members to give you a hand. We will next see who has a lightning talk - anything that you would like to share with the group that you have found interesting since we last met. We would like to keep the lightning talks to 1 - 3 minutes of action packed information. If you have something you would like to present to the group that will take longer, please let one of the organizers know and we will schedule a presentation for you. Speaking of presentations, we have two planned.

For the newbies in attendance, JeffMo will provide a brief overview of irb - Interactive Ruby. irb is a powerful tool often under appreciated by developers new to Ruby. irb allows you to run a single Ruby command or an entire program from the command line. JeffMo will show some tricks for getting the most out of irb that might even be interesting to the most experienced Ruby developers in the crowd.

For the more experienced RoR developers, Myers will discuss Fixtures and Mocks. He will provide a brief history of the evolution of these useful tools to define test data and some war stories and innovative uses that will be of interest to everyone.

Pizza and drinks will be provided.
