In our continuing focus on educating Northeast Ohio on Ruby development, we have decided to take a slightly different direction. Over the next 6 months, we will be developing an application using Ruby on Rails (the popular framework for Agile web development), starting from scratch, implementing new features of the app with every meeting. Each month will have a different theme, starting this month with "Rails from Scratch".

This series is meant for anyone with interest in Ruby, from newbies to experts. It will be highly interactive, giving everyone a chance to get questions answered and feel comfortable with the topic. Basic object-oriented programming knowledge is assumed. Don't have Ruby or Rails on your computer? Stop by our Installfest table for help getting your machine ready so you can follow along.

The schedule for this month's meeting looks like:

    • “ I will learn more about it. What is the mailing list group? ”
    • “ The presentation team really knew their stuff. I'm coming from a Delphi WIN32 and .Net development background so test driven development is really new to me. The section on setting up GIT went really fast but I was able to chat with a few others there and get that going. I am still a bit skeptical about the benefit of Ruby/Rails but I can see from the energy of the more seasoned coders in the room and many projects going on that there is a real need for programmers well versed in this platform and proficient with Agile, test driven development. ”
    • “ We covered a lot, and nearly got a working application. I am looking forward to seeing more cucumber and rspec driving the development of a real application. ”
    • “ Very informative. I'm really loving the hands-on format. I think that some of it went by too quickly, but it is easy to catch up. Can't wait for the next one. ”
    • “ Information about parking and how to locate the office building should have been more specific. Fortunately, I "guessed" correctly and was able to make it on time. The installfest was a bust since there was no public Internet access. There was a lot of information to digest and it came at you very quickly. That being said, questions were definitely encouraged. ”
