Re: [ruby-112] Fwd: Contract ruby work

Sebastian

I am an independent rails (now merb) contractor. I've been working full-time for 1.5 years, and 3/4 time for half a year before. I am fully contracted for the next year. My current contract & most of my previous work is for enterprise.

I have no blog. I have no business card. I have no website. The sum total of marketing that I did was to tell 2-3 people in Vancouver that I was available and go to a couple rails meetups.

I turn down potential contracts on average of 1 every 5-6 weeks. About half of these come just because of the minimal posting I do in the comments of OTHER people's blogs & entering tickets in various issue trackers. I'm not even a very visible open-source contributor, because I just never have the time to clean up & publish my hacks (but GitHub is changing this). I can only imagine the amount of work that people with visible, popular rails/merb-centric blogs turn down.

My previous experience was WebObjects (java), PHP, and various open source CMSs. I did have good enterprise-level credentials and references when I became a contractor.

For experienced web developers,  the productivity advantage  with Merb is even greater than with Rails. Plus, working with ruby & with rails or merb is much more fun. I was STRONGLY reminded of this when integration work that I had to do recently involved hacking on a large open source spring/maven based project, and on an in-house drupal site. XML as a programming language? Bah. Not fun.

At the (rather large enterprise-level) software development firm where I am a contractor, rails/merb is now officially the web framework of choice.

Cheerio,

Hi all,
I was a java developer for 7 years. It's not easy to find a java development position now, should I change to be a Ruby developer? your suggestion?

Hi all,

I want to say that Adam (who is looking for a Ruby developer) is a great client. We had the opportunity to help him with his site for about a year. He always pays his bills on time and is great to work with. I would highly recommend working with him.

Peter,

Howdy!  I am searching for a competent ruby programmer to do some
light contract work on my job boards on a monthly basis (10-15 hours
per month).  I was using a group in Vancouver but there Ruby guy
departed.  Thank you for letting me impose and I appreciate any leads
you might be able to offer.
