The Seattle Ruby Network presents RUBY SOUP.
Who is Ruby Soup? If you're interested in Ruby on Rails, Agile Development, and getting to know your Ruby community, then this is for you. We hope to have all different skill levels show up from beginners to experts.
What is Ruby Soup? Its community based learning and development. We're going to collectively develop some open source projects, so bring your idea to the group and we'll vote. Majority always wins at Ruby Soup. Maybe your idea will be chosen? We're a laid back group of folks, and we're passionate about Agile development and creating a thriving Ruby community. If this sounds interesting, we hope you'll come.
The Philosophy: According to the story, some travelers come to a village, carrying nothing more than an empty pot. Upon their arrival, the villagers are unwilling to share any of their food stores with the hungry travelers. The travelers fill the pot with water, drop a large stone in it, and place it over a fire in the village square. One of the villagers becomes curious and asks what they are doing. The travelers answer that they are making "stone soup", which tastes wonderful, although it still needs a little bit of garnish to improve the flavor, which they are missing. The villager doesn't mind parting with just a little bit to help them out, so it gets added to the soup. Another villager walks by, inquiring about the pot, and the travelers again mention their stone soup which hasn't reached its full potential yet. The villager hands them a little bit of seasoning to help them out. More and more villagers walk by, each adding another ingredient. Finally, a delicious and nourishing pot of soup is enjoyed by all. When: We're going to Meetup twice a month, the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month at 7pm.
Where: We're going to be working at the CrystalCommerce office in Lake City, we've got 6-8 computer stations, Some OSX, some Windows, etc. We've got a couple bean bag chairs for those using laptops. We have hot tea and beverages available.
We're going to be doing some pair programming, so we can team people up and get started. There is ample white board space available, so we'll be able to really draw out what we're going to play with.
Beginners and Donations are welcome. Just like the villagers in the Stone Soup story, sometimes we programmers get hungry. Its not mandatory, but it would be wonderful if everyone occasionally brought some healthy snacks.
